The standoff began around 3 a.m. at the Scottish Inn at the corner of Murfreesboro Pike and Fesslers Lane off of Interstate 40 in south Nashville.
It was not immediately clear why the man, identified as Charles Carroll, was standing on the roof.
Several police were on the scene trying to negotiate with the 41-year-old, who eventually talked with negotiators and surrendered without incident.

A three-hour standoff with a man on a hotel roof in south Nashville Friday morning ended peacefully.
The standoff began around 3 a.m. at the Scottish Inn at the corner of Murfreesboro Pike and Fesslers Lane off of Interstate 40 in south Nashville.
It was not immediately clear why the man, identified as Charles Carroll, was standing on the roof.
Several police were on the scene trying to negotiate with the 41-year-old, who eventually talked with negotiators and surrendered without incident.
Police reported Carroll admitted to smoking crack cocaine prior to the incident.
Carroll was booked into the Metro jail for disorderly conduct and vandalism. He remains jailed in lieu of $10,000.
Carroll is expected to be referred for a psychological evaluation.
